Abstract

A total of 102 species, varieties or forms are added to the algal flora of Oklahoma including 61 Chlorophyta, 1 Chrysophyta, 11 Euglenophyta, 3 Pyrrophyta, 25 Cyanophyta and 1 Rhodophyta. References are cited for descriptions and illustrations of the taxa, and the localities of collections are indicated. The list of algae presented herein includes a part of the results of an algal survey of Oklahoma initiated in 1951 and sponsored by the University of Oklahoma Biological Survey. Previous records of algae from the State of Oklahoma are given in the following: Gabel (1927); Taft (1931, 1934, 1935a, 1935b, 1937a, 1937b, 1940, 1949); Transeau, et al. (1934); Leake (1939, 1945, 1948); Booth (1941a, 1941b); Maloney (1944); Jenkins (1949); Ophel (1950a, 1950b, 1954). Among these accounts were certain doubtful names and a few duplications, often under a synonym. The total number of named species, varieties and forms given in these references is 658. To this are added herein 102 to make a total of 760. An algal flora for the State is presented in Vinyard (1958). Notes on the taxa and descriptions are to be presented elsewhere. References for each species are given in parentheses following the name to include a description and illustration, where possible, in a recent publication in English. The taxonomic outline follows that of G. M. Smith (1950) with certain modifications from Prescott (1951).
