Abstract

Additional occurrences of Pteroretis are recorded from eleven surface and subsurface Lower Carboniferous localities. The stratigraphic range of Pteroretis is extended into the Lower Carboniferous Springer Formation, and palynological evidence is presented for a Springer age for the Jackfork Group of the frontal Ouachita Mountains of Oklahoma, rather than the generally accepted Mississippian age. An eastern Greenland presence of Pteroretis, and the associated assemblage, indicate the paleolatitudinal Grandispora suite of Sullivan (1965). Consideration is given to the affinity of Pteroretis, and it is demonstrated to be a plant spore of terrigenous origin and should not be assigned to the Dinophyceae or Acritarcha.
