Abstract

For the first time, the elementary reaction responsible for the inhibition by fullerenes of the liquid-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons was identified. A study of the product of addition to fullerene С60 of radical intermediates of the cumene oxidation shows that the inhibition caused by addition of RO2 • peroxyl radicals to C60 and C70 molecules. The measurement of the inhibition parameters allows concluding that C70 fullerene is a more effective inhibitor of cumene and ethylbenzene oxidation than C60. The alkyl derivatives of C60 were not formed at oxidation hydrocarbons in the presence of C60 due to their decay in the reaction with oxygen.
