Abstract

(Am J Obstet Gynecol. 2021;225:668.e1–668.e9. [Epub June 23, 2021]) Postpartum anemia has serious adverse maternal outcomes. Iron is the primary cause of postpartum anemia. Moderate to severe anemia is recommended to be treated with intravenous (IV) iron such as iron sucrose. Although IV iron has been found to be superior to oral treatment for rate of serum ferritin and hemoglobin (Hb) increase, compliance after discharge may be low due to need for use of medical facilities for administration. Adding oral to IV iron has not been evaluated. This study aimed to determine whether oral iron bisglycinate added to IV iron sucrose for the treatment of postpartum anemia was more effective than IV iron sucrose.
