• Gluteus medius and gluteus minimus segmental activity levels measured with fine-wire electromyography. • Adding hip rotation can increase segmental gluteus medius and gluteus minimus activity levels. • Hip abduction with internal rotation elicits moderate-to-high activity in all gluteus medius and gluteus minimus segments. • Split-squat exercises elicits low activity in all gluteus medius and gluteus minimus segments.
