Abstract

The conference chairman, Professor Padma K. Shukla, was born on July 7, 1950. During the conference dinner we therefore celebrated his 50th birthday. Padma was then honoured by many speakers from the plasma and space physics communities, who stressed Padma's truly outstanding scientific activity (e.g. about 600 publications in the best scientific journals, his international leadership, his many recent papers on various subjects in the journal Phys. Rev. Lett., and his most important discoveries in colloidal plasma science as well as in theoretical space plasma physics and astrophysics). Padma's key role in inspiring and helping bright young scientists, as well as supporting his colleagues in the developing and east European countries was of course also pointed out. But most of all we appreciate Padma because he is such a nice personality with remarkable human qualities. On behalf of the plasma physics community I wish Padma a happy, healthy and prosperous future.
