Abstract

In Dahlen (1978), hereafter referred to as ENMRE, the normal mode excitation problem on a rotating earth model has been solved completely, in closed form. A peculiarity of that solution is that the normal mode excitation amplitudes appear to depend explicitly upon the change tiQ in the rate of rotation. The purpose of this addendum is to show that in fact there is no such dependence. All of the results obtained in ENMRE can, as a consequence, be simplified substantially. The apparent dependence arises via the coefficients g,, defined in equation (12) of ENMRE. That equation can, however, be rewritten in the form
