Abstract
In the spring issue of Unterrichtspraxis (10, No. 1 [1977], 85-90), I reported that the decline in the number of high school students enrolled in German in the state of Iowa from 5,967 in 1973-74 to 5,542 in 1974-75 continued to 5,305 in 1975-76. However, contrary to all expectations, last year's enrollment (1976-77) reached an all time high of 6,134 (5,751 in the public and 383 in private schools). Spanish enrollment is also slightly up from 18,809 (1973-74) to 19,100 (1976-77), while French, Latin, and Russian continue their steady decline; French from 10,388 (1973-74) to 9,146 (1976-77), Latin from 1,390 (1973-74) to 919 (1976-77), and Russian from 185 (1973-74) to 108 (1976-77).
