Abstract

This paper presents the adaptive relay setting for distribution systems with wind generators. The Advanced Distribution Automation System (ADAS) is applied to monitor the operation status of wind generators (WG) and line switches. For the change of network configuration due to operation of line switches to perform the load transfer between distribution feeders or the variation of WG operation status, the function of adaptive relay setting is activated by the ADAS control master station to perform the short circuit analysis to solve the magnitude and direction of fault current flows, which is used for the adjustment of protective relay settings accordingly. The sample distribution feeders with open loop configuration and close loop configuration respectively are used to demonstrate the adaptive relay setting for distribution systems with various operation scenarios of wind generators. It is concluded that the fault currents contributed by wind generators have to be included in the design of TAP/LEVEL settings of protective relays by ADAS system to achieve good protection of smart distribution systems.
