Abstract

This paper presents a new adaptive optimal reclosure technique. The proposed reclosure system consists of two parts, the fault identification unit and the optimal reclosure timing unit. The fault identification unit is based on the analysis of fault transients by using wavelet packet transform (WPT) to distinguish the fault type and determine the fault persistence time of a transient fault. The optimal reclosure timing unit is designed to determine the best reclosure time for reducing the system oscillation and enhancing power system stability by monitoring the transient energy of the power system. The presented simulation studies showed that the wavelet packet transform is very effective to extract the transient components from the complicated fault signals, therefore, effectively enhance the performance of the optimal reclosure system.
