Abstract

We propose an online, wide-band, adaptive, and no data-traffic interruption polarization mode dispersion (PMD) monitoring system using acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTFs). With the nonsignal carrying amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise as the reference signal, without interrupting the signal-carrying data traffic, multiple cascaded AOTFs are used at the optic receiver side to scan the spectrum of the ASE noise. Using the fixed-analyzer method, PMDs of different wavelength bands, which ranges from 1200–1700 nm of an optic-fiber communication system, can be found by adaptively changing the radio frequency of AOTFs. The monitoring range of the PMD value can be up to several hundred ps by properly increasing the cascading number of AOTFs.
