Abstract

Abstract An adaptive motion‐compensated discrete cosine transform (DCT) coding system is proposed for the compression of moving images. This system is based on a motion estimation algorithm [8] and a DCT coding scheme. The motion estimation algorithm employed is effective and reduces temporal redundancy, while the DCT combined with an adaptive rule reduces spatial redundancy. The adaptive rule is developed based on the local characteristics of motion‐compensated prediction errors.
