Abstract

Field busses are specific networks which interconnect automation devices and machines. They are being increasingly integrated into the Internet to enable global access to the information traveling over their wires. In order to guarantee interoperability with external systems and applications, most people agree that a common data exchange standard has to be established. Nevertheless, this has yet to be accomplished. The present paper answers the question of interoperability in a completely different manner. Field bus systems as well as the external infrastructure may keep their specific interfaces and data exchange formats. But the field bus systems become capable of adapting the information exchange dynamically according to the needs of the outside environment.
