Abstract

Two adaptive controllers for the regulation of the respiratory quotient of a fed-batch baker's yeast fermentation are presented. The first one is a feed forward adaptive controller based on a second order model from which the parameters are determined with auxiliary measurements. The second one is a self-tuning controller. Both controllers are based on a newly developed sub-optimal control design method. Experiments with a 100 liter pilot fermentor have shown the accuracy of the two controllers. The self-tuning controller is preferable for general application because less a priori knowledge is required.
