Abstract

The goal of this paper is to construct an adaptive scheme that uses combinatorial keying for heterogeneous mobile wireless sensor nodes (ACKS-HWSN). Most of the previous work in security of WSN deals with homogeneous sensor nodes (SNs). In homogeneous WSNs, all sensors have similar resources (such as memory capacity, and battery life). Many techniques designed for these networks suffer from communication complexity. In this paper, we deal with heterogeneous sensor networks that handle three types of sensors: gold-SNs, silver-SNs and bronze-SNs. Gold-SNs have the highest resources, silver-SNs have intermediate resources, while bronze-SNs have the least resources. The proposed ACKS-HWSN is a dynamic combinatorial key pre-distribution scheme. ACKS-HWSN distinguishes between the three types of SNs depending on the available resources at each SN. ACKS-HWSN uses Exclusion Basis System (EBS) and SN locations to improve the performance. ACKS-HWSN improved performance in terms of security as well as local communication connectivity.
