Abstract

Introducing fun and humor into the learning environment may have benefits such as increasing student attentiveness and understanding of the course material, lowering tension and boosting student morale. How to introduce humor into a course can be a problem for those educators who feel that they are not natural comedians. One potential solution is to engage students with fun, course relevant games. This paper describes how common popular games have been adapted for use in a human factors and ergonomics (HFE) course. Games that have been adapted include a scavenger hunt, Pictionary, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Cranium and Jeopardy. The adapted games are: a Student Preparedness Scavenger Hunt, HFE Pictionary, Who Wants to Be an Ergonomist, HFE Cranium and HFE Jeopardy. The HFE learning objectives, game rules, sample tasks/questions and scoring recommendations are provided.
