Abstract

This chapter is based on a research project examining the sociocultural adaptation of Chinese parachute kids who study at American high schools. It presents stories of three “parachute kids” as in-depth case studies. Those case studies demonstrate that those who are integrated appear to be those with an open and curious mind, who are proactive in making adjustments by getting to know more about the local people and culture, and who use the adjustments as an opportunity for reflection and growth. In contrast, those who resist making adjustments appear to be those with a more passive attitude who thus become separated from the host culture. The majority of them seem to fall between: They do not resist the new culture while holding onto their home culture, but at the same time, they struggle to reconcile the differences.
