Adaptation of BRIAN-interview (Ukranian language version) for biological rhythms assessment at acute psychosis patients

Abstract

Background In recent years renewed scientific interest studying human biological rhythms. Increase in number of publications devoted to “internal rhythms” study in general practice, and psychiatry in particular. For routine practice is necessary to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the patient’s condition. So, we offer an adapted Ukrainian language version of the BRIAN-interview. This is a pilot study, aimed to evaluate general structure of the scale and its items, before reliability and validity assessment. Methods Ukrainian language BRIAN-interview version allowed to assess the frequency of problems related to the maintenance of circadian rhythm regularity in patients with acute psychosis. We used translated from English version of this scale for assessment of the 60 patients with schizophrenia. Results Acute psychotic inpatients in general psychiatric department with F20-29 diagnostic category on ICD 10, and middle age 35.2 years were examined during 6 months. The evaluation was conducted during first 1-4 days after admission. The total average BRIAN score ranged 41 points. An assessment revealed as mild alterations in sleep patterns, daily and social activities, eating disorders and chronotype. Clear patterns’ dependence of different age patient’s categories was determined. Conclusions The results of research for the Ukrainian language BRIAN-interview version among patients with acute psychosis were submitted. Interview evaluates the biological rhythms of the patient in the last 15 days by major domains: sleep, daily and social activity, diet and identify preferred hronotyp.
