Abstract
The objective of this study was to know whether the seedling of the two varieties of lowlandrice Ciliwung and Ciherang can grow well in condition of water stress induced bypolyethylene glycol 6000. This research was conducted in the Laboratory of Plant Physiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences,University of Lampung in December 2014, in a 2x3 factorial experiment. Factor A was alowland rice varieties with two levels : Ciherang and Ciliwung. Factor B was thepolyethylene glycol 6000 with 3 levels : 0% w/v, 10% w/v and 20% w/v. Each combinationof treatment was repeated 5 times. The number of experimental unit was 30. The variablein this study were shoot length, fresh weight, dry weight and total chlorophyll content. Datawas analyzed using ANOVA at 5% significance level and proceed with the determination ofa simple effect with the LSD test at 5% significance level. The results showed that Ciheranghave better growth characteristics than Ciliwung. Both varieties negatively responsed topolyethylene glycol 6000 indicated by a decrease in fresh weight, dry weight and total chlorophyll content, while shoots length Ciherang showed a positive response. During seedling growth Ciliwung more adaptive to drought than Ciherang varieties indicated by an increase in the ratio of root shoot and an increased proportion of roots. The final conclusion was that Ciherang more potential to develop in arid region than Ciliwung.Keyword : Lowland rice, Ciherang, Ciliwung, Poliethylen glycol 6000, Shoot length, Freshweight, Dry weight, Chlorophyll content.
