Abstract

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to obtain a Spanish version of the Paediatric Balance Scale (PBS), a tool used to assess functional balance in school-age children with motor disabilities. MethodTwo independent translations were made of the PBS into Spanish. The resulting translations were combined into a single version using a process of consensus, which was in turn back-translated into English by two independent translators. The concordance between versions and the comprehensibility of the translation into Spanish were checked. Once a final version was established, it was applied to an experimental group composed of 59 children with balance disturbance in order to evaluate its reliability. ResultsA Cronbach's alpha value of α=0.886 was obtained, with an intraclass correlation coefficient for test-retest reliability of ICC=0.983, and inter-rater reliability of ICC=0.964. ConclusionA version of the PBS adapted for Spanish-speaking children has been obtained that preserves the psychometric properties of its original version in English.
