Abstract

This investigation was aimed to adapt and validate the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAPI) in Venezuelan population. Two samples were used: one of 348 parents from the general population and other of 35 confirmed child aggressors. Both samples were equivalent in age. For the 77 items Abuse Scale we found a greater discriminative power using the unweighted scoring system. The simple sum of the 77 items defined a consistent scale ( α = 0.876) which allows an optimal classification of the subjects (85.3%) and has a structure of 8 factors similar to those of the original scale. We recommend a replication of the study in other regions of the country, using a larger sample, paired demographically and equivalent in terms of their proportion of aggressors and people from the general population.
