Abstract

A novel adaptable transmitter scheme for optical networks (ONs) is proposed supporting the generation of arbitrary higher-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats currently used in worldwide installed networks. With this transmitter structure, a low cost actual network upgrade towards flexible elastic future-proof ONs is allowed.
