Abstract

In the event of a fire, vulnerable individuals such as infants and the elderly are highly susceptible to injury and death. This is typically a result of inadequate cognitive capacity for a rapid response to fires and/or insufficient physical capabilities for evacuation. Child daycare centers and facilities for the elderly must install slides on the 2nd and 3rd floors that comply with KFI accreditation standards. In addition, the installed Life Chutes should not be of the vertical or inclined descending type. Ideally, facilities for the elderly should be situated on the ground floor (on the same level as the evacuation route) and should only be located on a higher floor when effective evacuation mechanisms such as slides or evacuation bridges are installed.
