Abstract

Hybrid DC transmission system becomes more and more popular in China because of its unique advantages. Compared with the boundary conditions of traditional highvoltage DC (HVDC) transmission systems, the boundary conditions of multi-terminal hybrid DC transmission systems have been changed. The coupling of the fault characteristics of different converters leads to differences in fault response. As the primary protection of traditional HVDC transmission lines, the adaptability of traveling wave protection in multi-terminal hybrid DC transmission lines is worth studying. In this paper, the fault characteristics and traveling wave characteristics of Kunliulong (KLL) multi-terminal hybrid DC transmission system are analyzed, and the adaptability of traveling wave protection is studied. Simulations have been done to verify the conclusion of adaptability. Also, the protection configuration schemes of DC lines are proposed.
