Abstract

The management of a renal transplant recipient who postoperatively developed acute urinary retention secondary to benign prostatic hypertrophy is discussed. The importance of a thorough urologic evaluation prior to renal transplantation is emphasized, especially in older male candidates. Should urinary retention occur following transplantation, temporary urinary diversion via suprapubic cystostomy should be employed until the patient is able to undergo prostatectomy.
