Abstract

Zieve recently described a syndrome consisting of transient hyperlipemia, jaundice and hemolytic anemia associated with alcoholic fatty liver and cirrhosis. Five cases of this syndrome are described herein and the relevant literature is reviewed. In almost all the patients there was pain in the upper part of the abdomen sometimes so severe that exploratory laparotomy was performed. It is suggested that this syndrome is due to specific damage to the pancreas (alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans ?) and to the liver (intrahepatic cholestasis with or without hepato-cellular damage ?).
