Abstract

A 37-year-old, healthy man presented with a red, painful eye and severe anterior uveitis. Results of an extensive evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of acute retinal necrosis, and the patient underwent a diagnostic vitrectomy. The inflammation resolved with intravenous and oral acyclovir therapy. Prompt diagnosis and treatment resulted in an excellent outcome. Severe anterior uveitis with hypopyon may uncommonly be the initial manifestation of acute retinal necrosis.
