Abstract

The epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of 201 hospitalized women with acute pyelonephritis in northern Israel were recorded. The mean age was 61 years, with 74% older than 50 years. Young women (< 50 years) had more urinary tract infectionrelated symptoms than did older women and had a shorter duration of fever after hospitalization. By a univariant analysis, four factors were associated with duration of fever: age, positive blood cultures, grade of pyuria, and serum urea levels. However, a multivariant analysis showed that age of > 50 years was the only independent factor which influenced the length of fever. Only three older diabetic women with bacteremia (1.5%) died.
