Abstract
Of the various methods of treatment advocated in cases of acute nontuberculous intrapulmonary suppuration, the induction of artificial pneumothorax has received scant attention. Many writers do not mention it, and others vary from unqualified recommendation to condemnation of the method. Kuttner, 1 for instance, emphatically condemns Forlanini's method of artificial pneumothorax in the treatment of abscess of the lung by saying that he believes the spontaneous cure is favored by coughing and expectorating, and that pneumothorax prevents this and favors the stagnation of pus. As a result, there is great danger of pus flowing over into other bronchi, leading to the formation of fresh foci of bronchopneumonia and multiple abscesses.
