ACUTE PULMONARY EDEMA DUE TO ASPIRATION OF GASTRIC JUICE Regurgitation and aspiration of stomach contents may cause serious complications in old and infirm patients, in those who are unconscious, regardless of the cause, and in those suffering from some abnormality of deglutition. Suffocation incident to massive aspiration may lead to acute asphyxial death. If the amount aspirated has been smaller, pulmonary abscesses, bronchiectasis, pneumonia or atelectasis may result. These are well recognized complications.
