Abstract

Objective: To review the clinical characteristics and outcome of patients with acute prostatitis evaluated at the Emergency Department (ED). Methods: Design: descriptive and retrospective study. Setting: A 650-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, Spain. Period: From January to October 2012. Patients: All patients evaluated at the ED with the diagnosis of acute prostatitis. Data were collected for demographic variables, comorbid conditions, previous episodes of prostatitis, clinical presentation, microbiological findings (urine and blood cultures), empirical antibiotic treatment, days of treatment, destination and attendance to the ED during the month following discharge.
