Abstract

A 23-year-old man with no significant medical or dental history presented to the emergency department (ED) complaining of several days of gum pain, metallic taste, low-grade fever, and generalized malaise. The patient was in the military and had spent the last week living and training under austere field conditions. In the ED, he appeared to be in no acute distress, and his vital signs were within normal limits, except for an oral temperature of 101.1°F(38.4°C). The remainder of his physical examination yielded normal results except for diffuse gingival edema and ulcerations (Figure).
