Abstract

Acute mental status changes in children and adolescents can often be a harbinger of a medical or psychiatric illness that requires an urgent and timely assessment. Acute mental status changes in a child can accompany acute changes in vital signs, which indicate need for an expedited evaluation. This chapter gives examples of presentations of acute mental status changes and their management. The interface between delirium and psychosis can be difficult to delineate, and examples of these conditions are given.
