Abstract

Numerous previous studies have linked hyperglycemia with poor outcomes in both medical and trauma patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU). The authors of this study attempted to correlate hyperglycemia in critically injured trauma patients with risk of infection. This prospective study was conducted at the Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Maryland over a 2.5-year period and involved 2200 patients admitted to the ICU. Initial glucose stabilization was performed with a goal glucose range of 80–120mg/dL.
