Abstract

groups treated with estradiol or -lipoic acid or l-carnitine alone or in combination with CCl4. The results of the study: The results showed that treatment with CCl4 induced significant changes in serum biochemical parameters, the histological and histochemical pictures of the liver accompanied by a significant increase in MDA and a significant decrease in SOD and GPx in liver. Whereas, animals treated with estradiol or -lipoic acid or l-carnitine were comparable to the control. On the other hand, estradiol or -lipoic acid or l-carnitine could improve the biochemical parameters, decreased the oxidative stress and improved the histological and histochemical pictures in the liver of CCl4-treated rats. It could be concluded that estradiol,-lipoic acid and l-carnitine succeeded to ameliorate the oxidative stress on liver. This improvement was pronounced in the group treated with -lipoic more than l-carnitine and the least in group treated with estradiol.
