Abstract

If given the choice between seeing a mechanical engineer with a bag of glasses in one hand and a sheaf of multicolored hand-drawn renderings of his double vision in the other versus a family of three children with runny noses and pink eyes, most pediatric ophthalmologists would choose the former. Fortunately for us, caring for children with acute conjunctivitis falls to our pediatric, family medicine, urgent care, and nurse practitioner colleagues who serve as frontline providers in the battle against “pink eye.” While the diagnosis and treatment of acute conjunctivitis in the outpatient setting may seem mundane, decisions regarding best treatment for these children and their families must be made by these medical professions in the absence of clear guidelines from their own professional societies.
