Acute Arterial Injuries in Civilian Practice

Abstract

One hundred and twenty cases of acute arterial trauma were managed in the Vascular Unit, Alexandria University Hospitals, Egypt, during the years 1980- 1985. Pulsating hematoma, AV fistulae, and complete transection constituted 70% of the cases. The extremity arteries were affected in 80%; 93% of the cases were males, and the second, third, and fourth decades were the most common ages. Knife or bullet wounds and car accidents were the most common injuries. Reconstructive arterial procedures were done in 68% of cases. The amputation rate was 8%, and the mortality rate was 1.7% of cases.
