Abstract

The term ‘appendicitis’ was first described by Reginald H. Fitz in 1886 and has since become the most common surgical emergency that can affect people of any age. Appendicitis is usually a clinical diagnosis so it is important for GPs to have a good understanding of the symptoms and signs of appendicitis in order to differentiate it from other causes of lower abdominal pain. GPs can play an invaluable role in the outcome of this condition as early referral can result in timely surgical intervention that leads to reduced morbidity.
