Abstract

SummaryFirstly, the different physiopathological pulmonary mechanisms of hypoxaemia are briefly described : alveolar hypoventilation, impairment of diffusion, venous-to-arterial shunts, together with the influence of inhalation of O2 and exercise.Secondly, a more extensive review is given about the appearance, the etiology and pathogenesis, the pathology, radiology and clinical features of the acute respiratory insufficiency produced by intrapulmonary venous-to-arterial shunts. Some specific aspects of the treatment are discussed : administration of large amounts of oxygen, continuous positive pressure breathing and administration of corticosteroids.
