Abstract
Children frequently present to surgeons for assessment of abdominal symptoms and signs. This contribution examines the approach to history and examination of such children, their initial management and specifically addresses the most common abdominal emergencies and the rare (but life-threatening) emergencies that may present. Common causes include appendicitis and non-specific abdominal pain. Rare (but potentially lethal) conditions include intussusception, midgut volvulus due to malrotation and a bleeding Meckel's diverticulum.
