Abstract

The accidental or deliberate destruction of satellites highlights the international regime currently in place for the supervision of space activities and for liabilities arising from them. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty and the 1972 Space Convention set up an exemplary mechanism. However, improved cooperation and organization of space activities has become necessary to limit the production of space debris. Effective limits must be placed on the stationing of weapons in space and the arms race that it implies.
