Abstract

Lactic dehydrogenase (LDH, LDH-1, and LDH-5 isozymes activity has been determined in 101 semen samples from 12 young Holstein-Friesian bulls. Highly significant (P<0.01) positive correlation coefficients were observed between LDH activity associated with spermatozoa free of seminal plasma and with each of the following: per cent motility, concentration, per cent live cells and a negative correlation with per cent abnormal cells. The LDH-1 activity of seminal plasma is highly significantly (P<0.01) negatively correlated with volume, per cent motility, concentration, per cent live cells and positively with per cent abnormal cells. Other significant correlation coefficients were observed between LDH, LDH-1, and LDH-5 activity associated with spermatozoa free of seminal plasma, seminal plasma, and various semen characteristics investigated.
