Abstract

Acid extracts of rat stalk median eminence (SME) evoked equivalent depletions of ovarian ascorbic acid (OAA) in intact and hypophysectomized assay rats. Although boiling the extract for 10 min significantly lowered its activity, the remaining activity elicited a highly significant depletion in both types of assay animal. Similarly, boiling greatly reduced, but did not destroy, the LH activity in acid extracts of rat anterior pituitary. These data suggest that the depletions evoked in intact assay rats by injection of crude extracts of SME may be due largely to nonspecific factors rather than to LH-RF. Thus, the validity of measurement of LH-RF activity in crude extracts of rat SME by the direct OAAD assay cannot be accepted unless the residual activity is first eliminated or simultaneous determinations are made -with hypophysectomized assay rats.
