Abstract

The activity coefficients of sodium bromide in MgBr 2, CaBr 2, SrBr 2 and BaBr2 were determined at 298 K and constant total ionic strengths of 0.1, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mol kg −1 at 298 K using emf techniques. The experimental activity coefficients were analyzed using the Harned, Scatchard, Reilly et al. and Pitzer equations. Using the values of mixing parameters obtained from the above equations, the excess Gibbs energies of mixing were calculated. Trace activity coefficients were also calculated and discussed in the light of modern theories of electrolyte solutions.
