Abstract

The activities of the World Health Organization related to disarmament have continued to focus on the follow-up and continuation of its study on “Effects of nuclear war on health and health services”. As reported in appendix VI of The United Nations Disarmament Yearbook for 1983, this study was requested by the World Health Assembly from the Director-General in its resolution WHA34.38, “The role of physicians and other health workers in the preservation and promotion of peace as the most significant factor for the attainment of health for all” The study was prepared by an International Committee of Experts in Medical Sciences and Public Health. It was submitted to the. Health Assembly in 1983 and published in 1984. It has been distributed, in seven languages, in about 19,000 copies.
