Abstract

The use of colored tiles or paper cutouts as representational tools in teaching summation formulas provides students with opportunities to explore and discover algebraic connections between formulas and concrete operations. These activities provide teachers with an easily accessible concept-building activity for developing formulas for the summation of consecutive positive even and odd integers.
