Abstract

Abstract French primary education has recently moved to the center of attention in public and professional debates. The traditional demanding programs and frequently old-fashioned teaching styles-geared to the entrance requirements of the lycées-used to cause nearly half of the children to become grade repeaters by the end of the fifth school year. (National figures published in 1970 mention 47 percent.) The situation is widely deplored, and the spirit of reform that has brought movement toward modern teaching programs and practices in secondary education now begins to focus on primary education. Newspapers and professional journals abound in articles on the topic.
