Abstract

Aim. – This paper reviews the effect of gender and life conditions on physical activity during growth. Topics. – Physical activity is reduced during puberty and decreases from 60 min/day at 10 years to 20 min/day at 20 years. During teenage, girls are the less active and their participation to intense activity (>6 Mets) is lower. Socio-economical conditions, marginal malnutrition, cold and hot climates, altitude and ethnic origins have no major influences on the quantity of daily physical activity (average daily heart rate close to 100 bpm). The need of physical activity is similar during growth whatever ethnic origins and live conditions. However these factors may influence the type of habitual physical activities. The time devoted to video activities (on average 1 à 3 h/day) is negatively correlated to physical activity score. Futures prospects. – A main objective in the next 10 years is to deal with the interactions between biological, psychological and sociological factors affecting physical activity. Conclusion. – Physical activity depends mainly on age and sex.
