Abstract

This paper presents the efficacy of bamboo in-filled wave barriers (IB) and open trench (OT) in mitigating ground-borne vibrations. The influence of excitation frequency, barrier location, barrier configuration, barrier dimensions, and foundation geometry on the active screening characteristics is evaluated using experimental and numerical investigations. The results obtained from the investigation demonstrate that the performance of IB as a vibration screening technique is quite satisfactory. It can be noticed that the effectiveness of wave barriers increases with an increase in frequency. It can also be observed that at lower frequencies, the barrier spacing notably impacts the performance of OT, while it does not influence the performance of IB significantly. Further, IB and OT are seen to screen vertical vibrations more efficiently than horizontal vibrations. Wave barriers are seen to be more effective in screening the induced vibration along the centreline of the vibration source compared to other radial lines.
