Abstract

In this research, the passive damping and active controlauthority of several basic active-passive hybrid piezoelectricnetworks are analysed and compared. The comparison is performedin a nondimensionalized manner, throughout which the importanceof the generalized electro-mechanical coupling coefficient ishighlighted. It is concluded that these configurations yieldvery similar open-loop performance for the same electro-mechanical coupling. It is shown that largerelectro-mechanical coupling leads to higher passive networkdamping and, depending on the design and configuration, couldalso derive better active authority and overall performance. Amethod of increasing the electro-mechanical coupling coefficient by using a negative capacitance circuit is proposed, analysed and experimentally verified.
